Eat & Stay
Eat in our Cafe
From April to September our Cafe is open from 10am to 4pm every weekend and every day during the school holidays. It is run by the wonderful Carol Gabb (who has her own Trip advisor mentions!). We serve as many local and Cornish products as we can – and as many homemade goodies as we have the energy to make! the weather is terrible, or Carol gets lonely, then we may close, so if you are making a special trip, please check and we will make sure we are open for you!
So come to Golant and join us - you don't have to paddle to be made welcome, and we'd love to share what we think is a very special place with you!
Look out on this page, and our social media feeds for special offers and events throughout the year.
Stay at The Sanctuary
June 2019 sees our new venture "The Sanctuary" open for business. It's 5 en-suite bedrooms all have stunning views over the estuary and private balconies. It is located just above the main village in 12 acres of woodland and pasture and is the perfect place to connect with the great outdoors. It's completely "off-grid" being powered by solar electricity and heated by solar thermal panels with a log boiler for back-up when the sun isn't shining. Water comes from our own 50m borehole. The bedrooms are all designed to be flexible with double, twin and triple bed options. In addition to 3 standard bedrooms, there is a larger bedroom with full size day bed and our Barn Owl suite which can sleep 4 and can double as a funtion room. Rooms are normally booked on a Bed & Breakfast basis. However, the Barn Owl Suite has it's own kitchen and so there is a self catering option. Self catering is also available to small groups (up to 12) either with or without the Barn Owl Suite.
The Santuary website should be completed soon and a link will be provided. In the meantime you can contact us by email or phone if you're interested in a stay.
A little more information .....
In our search for as many local products as possible, we are delighted to tell you that our eggs, sausages and bacon come from Leyonne Farm, Golant. Leyonne also produce milk that goes into Trewithen Dairies' lovely things, and we are also using their butter for cake making. So we have lots of yummy things for you to try - we always have scones & Chocolate Cake and then a selection of the following...... Fruit & Stem Ginger Cake, Coffee & Walnut Cake, Carrot Cake, Lemon & Poppy Seed Cake, Marmalade Flapjacks (with Karen's marmalade..), Lavender Cake, Elderflower & Gooseberry Cake, Rose Cake, Orange & Rosemary Cake, 'Blondies' (as opposed to 'Brownie's, made with white choc & pecans), and a selection of homemade biscuits, fude, and dog biscuits! We also have a least one gluten free cake - either apricot & almond, or cherry & almond - sometimes both at once, and some gluten free snack bars.
We welcome well behaved dogs - there are dog biscuits & towels, and you can try out our dog Jake's favourite walks in our new walking guides for sale.
We are pleased to say that we are also stocking Cornish Orchard's Lemonade and Elderflower Presse (non alcoholic!) and this year we will be offfering water in glass bottles that can be returned to us for recycling, as well as tap water....on tap!
Encounter Cornwall is very pleased to be able to join the 'ReFILL' initiative - businesses will offer refills of tap water for your bottles. We lready offer it, but are delighted to become part of a widespread campaign to try and reduce plastic consumption and waste. If you have a reusable bottle that you want to take with you we will happily fill it for you, The aim is eventually, that everyone will carry their own bottles. We have a limited amount of Refill's stainless steel bottles for you to buy, and all proceeds go to Friends of the Fowey Estuary.
We have decided not to offer straws at Cafe Kayak - it seems to be not necessary, unless we have tiny children, then we have a stock of compostable straws that we can ensure goes into our compost bin. This is because we learnt that even biodegradable straws will not break down in water as the temperatures are not high enough.
A third initiative is to offer bamboo coffee cups to buy to encourage customers not to buy single use cups, even if ours are compostable. If you buy one from us we will give you the first cup free. Then, if you bring it in again we will give you 20 pence off coffee and 10 pence off tea refills.
We have coffee roasted in Cornwall (yes, really!), Tea from the Tregothnan Estate, Cornish ice creams, jams, clotted cream (obviously..). Our other teas come from Char teas in Winchester because their tea bags are biodegradable.
All our takeaway splendours use ‘Vegware’ products, which means they are completely biodegradable and compostable. You can either return them to the Boatshed or bin them, knowing they won't be around for decades! (for more details, please see our Green Policy in the FAQ's section of the website)
We're beginning to have our regulars as well as repeat holidaymakers, and we are adding up how many cakes etc, we have got through! We are also happy to discuss any private parties/teas/picnics you might like, so please email us if you think of anything...
Karen has designed some lovely items for the Boatshed that will make great gifts.... We now have an exclusive range of T shirts - two designs for Adults, one for children, Cotton shopping bags, T Towels, greetings cards, and framed prints. Plus we are now selling our branded caps... We can organise posting for you if you are not able to get to the Boatshed in person - gives us a ring, or an email.
So if you want to arrive early before your trip, or stay afterwards we'd love to see you. You can take away any of the goodies for later - and if you are not paddling, but passing then pop in - you are very welcome! If you haven’t got time to stay after your trip you can have a takeaway, or can pre order a picnic for your trip or hire adventure.
If your trip is earlier or later than the published opening hours, don't worry, we will be open at least 30 mins before your trip so that you can stock up your energy levels!
We are very happy to discuss opening outside our published hours for groups or Birthdays – get in touch and we’ll do our best to help.
We also have a small, but perfectly formed garden around the Boatshed, and you are welcome to come and sit, bring your own sandwiches if you are happy to buy a drink from us, and relax!
Karen has been busy with new designs of cards, framed pictures, tea towels, children's activity sheets and guides. We have a small collection of locally published books and our own honey for sale. We have free reading material including Cornwall Wildlife Trust's magazines for adults & children and games for rainy days, free wifi and a slide show of some of Karen's favourite photos (not all, or you'd never get out on the river!)
