Citizen Science

Citizen science is about inspiring the community to get involved in real-time research, like wildlife spotting, species monitoring and environmental projects.

Working with local schools and residents, plus all who visit our region, we lead outdoor community learning that turns local action into meaningful scientific insight. The goal? To inspire environmental consciousness in everyone, sustaining the future of our rivers, estuaries and the wider world.

Guardians of the Estuary (ProBleu)
Our ‘Guardians of the Estuary’ project helps children explore and protect their local estuary. At Encounter, we are proud to be the lead delivery partner for the Fowey River catchment in affiliation with ProBleu, a European-funded initiative that supports ocean and freshwater literacy projects.

Through classroom learning and hands-on activities like kayaking, students discover wildlife, sustainability, and local history in and around the Fowey waterways, building confidence, teamwork and a sense of responsibility as future guardians of the river.

First delivered in 2024 to Fowey Primary School, this project kick-started a curriculum that is now shared across schools to inspire wider ocean literacy in young people.
