STOP PRESS ------- We are now closed until Easter Hols!
LATEST NEWS .....Our Boatshed base will be undergoing some repairs, decoration and general tidying up during the winter months, but we will do our best to keep it neat and clean for your trips. As the Cafe is closed we will try to arrange some coffee & tea (and maybe some homemade biscuits!) to welcome you on arrival. This will be with our compliments - if you wish to make a donation to the Cornwall Wildlife Trust, that would be very much appreciated, but we will leave that up to you! If you are a large group and would like Karen to bake you a cake please get in touch and we will see what we can do to help.
Encounter Cornwall is very pleased to be able to join the 'reFILL' initiative - businesses will offer refills of tap water for your bottles. We already offer it, but are delighted to become part of a widespread campaign to try and reduce plastic consumption and waste. We will continue to sell Coastal Spring water at Cafe Kayak, which is supporting the RNLI. As we are aware of the problems with plastic litter we will add a donation to the RNLI if you return your bottle to us for recycling. If you have a reusable bottle that you want to take with you we will happily fill it for you, and still make a donation, as you are saving plastic as well! The aim is eventually, that everyone will carry their own bottles. We are also trying to get hold of Refill's stainless steel bottles for you to buy.
We have decided not to offer straws at Cafe Kayak - it seems to be not necessary, unless we have tiny children, then we have a stock of compostable straws that we can ensure goes into our compost bin. This is because we learnt that even biodegradable straws will not break down in water as the temperatures are not high enough.
A third initiative is to offer bamboo coffee cups to buy to encourage customers not to buy single use cups, even if ours are compostable. If you buy one from us we will give you the first cup free. Then, if you bring it in again we will give you 20 pence off coffee and 10 pence off tea refills.
Karen & Carol will be planning and developing ideas over the winter, ready to open for the Easter holidays. Inbetween times we are very happy to discuss private events with you, so don't hestitate to get in touch!
We have had an exhausting, but fantastic season, mainly due to Carol's irrepressible good humour and energy. We're beginning to have our regulars as well as repeat holidaymakers, and we are adding up how many cakes etc, we have got through! We are also happy to discuss any private parties/teas/picnics you might like, so please email us if you think of anything...
Karen has designed some lovely items for the Boatshed that will make great gifts.... We now have an exclusive range of T shirts - two designs for Adults, one for children, Cotton shopping bags, T Towels, greetings cards, and framed prints. Plus we are now selling our branded caps... We can organise posting for you if you are not able to get to the Boatshed in person - gives us a ring, or an email.
In our search for as many local products as possible, we are delighted to tell you that our eggs & bacon come from Leyonne Farm, Golant. Leyonne also produce milk that goes into Trewithen Dairies' lovely things, and we are also using their butter for cake making. So we have lots of yummy things for you to try - we always have scones & Chocolate Cake and then a selection of the following...... Fruit & Stem Ginger Cake, Coffee & Walnut Cake, Carrot Cake, Lemon & Poppy Seed Cake, Marmalade Flapjacks (with Karen's marmalade..), Lavender Cake, Elderflower & Gooseberry Cake, Rose Cake, Orange & Rosemary Cake, 'Blondies' (as opposed to 'Brownie's, made with white choc & pecans), and a selection of homemade biscuits, fudge, and dog biscuits! We are also offering bacon or halloumi sandwiches, and we have sourdough bread from Quay Bakery in Fowey. We are also using organic white flour from Shipston Mill.
We now also have a least one gluten free cake - either apricot & almond, or cherry & almond - sometimes both at once, and some gluten free snack bars.
We have coffee roasted in Cornwall (yes, really!), Tea from the Tregothnan Estate, Cornish ice creams, jams, clotted cream (obviously..). Our other teas come from Char teas in Winchester because their tea bags are biodegradable.
All our takeaway splendours use ‘Vegware’ products, which means they are completely biodegradable and compostable. You can either return them to the Boatshed or bin them, knowing they won't be around for decades!
We are very pleased to introduce our Picnic Tea menu - a selection of homemade goodies, beautifully packed in a compostable box, with wooden, compostable cutlery and containers. We are keeping the selection fairly modest, so that we are able to cope with orders, but if we can prepare something extra, please get in touch and we will do our best! We would appreciate it if you could book in advance, so that we don't hold you up from leaving on time. We also have a smart splashproof bag that you can buy for £3.00 to carry the picnic and your other essentials in!
So if you want to arrive early before your trip, or stay afterwards we'd love to see you. You can take away any of the goodies for later - and if you are not paddling, but passing then pop in - you are very welcome! If you haven’t got time to stay after your trip you can have a takeaway, or can pre order a picnic for your trip or hire adventure.
We will be open seasonally – mainly in the school holidays, and weekends – opening times will be updated on this page, or please give us a ring if you are thinking of coming down. We will be open 10am to 5pm on those days, and at least 30 mins before our earliest trip of the day, and 30 mins before our last trip.
It is run by Karen, along with the wonderful Carol Gabb (who already has her own Trip advisor mentions!). We will be serving as many local and Cornish products as we can – and as many homemade goodies as we have the energy to make!
A little more information....
If your trip is earlier or later than the published opening hours, don't worry, we will be open at least 30 mins before your trip so that you can stock up your energy levels!
We are very happy to discuss opening outside our published hours for groups or Birthdays – get in touch and we’ll do our best to help.
We also have a small, but perfectly formed garden around the Boatshed, and you are welcome to come and sit, bring your own sandwiches if you are happy to buy a drink from us, and relax!
Karen has been busy with new designs of cards, framed pictures, tea towels, children's activity sheets and guides. We have a small collection of locally published books and our own honey for sale. We have free reading material including Cornwall Wildlife Trust's magazines for adults & children and games for rainy days, free wifi and a slide show of some of Karen's favourite photos (not all, or you'd never get out on the river!)
We welcome well behaved dogs - there are dog biscuits & towels, and you can try out our dog Jake's favourite walks in our new walking guides for sale.
So come to Golant and join us - you don't have to paddle to be made welcome, and we'd love to share what we think is a very special place with you!
