Clair Connibeer
Clair grew up in the riverside village of Golant on the River Fowey and has spent much of her life connected to the estuary and its waterways. After travelling and completing a degree in Tourism Management, she returned home to Cornwall where she now runs Encounter alongside her husband, Ben. Clair took over the business in 2020, building on its foundations to grow a strong community around paddling, nature and time on the water.
Clair discovered stand-up paddleboarding several years ago and quickly developed a passion for the sport. She is a Paddle UK Level 3 SUP Coach, BSUPA Level 2 Senior Instructor, aspirant Paddle UK SUP Instructor Tutor, SUP endurance race coach, and paddlesports leader, guiding both SUP and kayaking on the water. She also holds RYA VHF Radio and Powerboat certifications.
As SUP Ambassador for Paddle UK, Clair helps raise awareness of the sport nationally through the SUP Starters YouTube series and by co-writing SUP Ready, a guide designed to support new and novice paddlers.
Within Encounter, Clair leads Encounter’s operations, overseeing finances, bookings, safety, licensing, session planning and instructor coordination to ensure every experience on the water runs safely and smoothly.
Clair also serves as a Fowey Harbour Commissioner, supporting safe access and a balanced future for the estuary. She is also a BBC Radio Cornwall Coast Watcher, sharing regular updates about the waterways, coastal life and wildlife of the Fowey Estuary.
Ben Connibeer
Ben is a key part of the team at Encounter, bringing a calm coaching style and a genuine passion for helping people feel confident on the water.
A Paddle UK Level 3 Coach and Paddle Sports Leader, Ben leads both kayak and stand-up paddleboard sessions, guiding guests through the River Fowey and helping paddlers develop their technique, confidence and enjoyment on the water. His relaxed and encouraging approach makes him a favourite with beginners and experienced paddlers alike.
Alongside coaching, Ben plays an important role behind the scenes within the business. From helping shape new ideas and experiences to designing merchandise and supporting the day-to-day running of Encounter, he brings creativity and practical know-how to the team.
Ben also represents the paddling community on the Fowey Harbour Port User Group, helping ensure paddle sports are represented in discussions around access and activity across the wider estuary.
Outside of the business, Ben is committed to supporting the local community and recently joined the Fowey Reserve Fire Brigade, volunteering as part of the on-call emergency response team.
