Coach Notes - Why I Love Coaching Stand-Up Paddleboarding (SUP) with Paddle UK's Learner-Led Philosophy
Stand-up paddleboarding (SUP) is an exhilarating sport that brings you closer to nature, challenges your balance, and promotes both physical fitness and mental relaxation. But what truly makes coaching SUP so rewarding for me here on the Fowey Estuary is the opportunity to teach others not just the mechanics of the sport, but the joy and freedom that comes with it. I have found an incredible philosophy in Paddle UK’s learner-led approach, and it’s one of the main reasons I love coaching SUP so much.
What is Paddle UK’s Learner-Led Philosophy?
Paddle UK’s learner-led philosophy places the focus of teaching directly on the learner, rather than simply on the instructor's agenda or predetermined outcomes. In essence, it’s about giving the student the freedom to explore, discover, and take ownership of their learning journey. This approach prioritizes:
1. Personalised Learning – Recognising that everyone learns differently and at their own pace.
2. Empowerment – Encouraging learners to set their own goals, make decisions, and solve problems on the water.
3. Continuous Reflection – Helping learners develop self-awareness and the ability to self-assess their progress.
This philosophy creates a more dynamic, engaging, and supportive learning environment, where students not only acquire skills but also gain confidence and a deeper connection to the sport.
The Joy of Watching Learners Flourish
One of the most rewarding aspects of coaching SUP through Paddle UK’s learner-led approach is seeing the learners’ journey unfold. In traditional coaching, students often follow a rigid set of steps or drills. While this can be effective for some, the learner-led philosophy gives students the room to explore and figure things out for themselves. This approach encourages:
- Problem-solving: Learners are encouraged to think critically about their balance, stroke technique, and movement on the water. If they fall or struggle, they’re not simply given the answer; they’re guided to reflect on what happened and how they can adapt.
- Self-discovery: Instead of being told exactly what to do, learners are given the space to make their own decisions. For instance, when they struggle with turning or paddling in choppy conditions, they are asked questions like, "What do you think you could try to make that easier?" or "What adjustments could help you stay balanced?" This promotes a deeper sense of ownership and understanding of their body’s movement.
- Building Confidence: There’s something magical about seeing a student who is initially unsure of themselves slowly gain confidence. With a learner-led approach, this process is organic, as they’re encouraged to make decisions and experiment in a safe and supportive environment. When they finally master a skill on their own or have that "Aha!" moment, the pride they feel is unparalleled.
Connecting with Nature and the Sport
Paddleboarding is inherently a sport that connects you with the outdoors. The calmness of the water, the scenery, and the physical movement of paddling all contribute to a sense of mindfulness and presence. Through Paddle UK’s learner-led philosophy, learners not only become proficient paddlers but also develop a deep connection to the natural environment around them.
- Mindful Exploration: The learner-led approach encourages learners to tune into the environment—whether that means adjusting their technique to the conditions of the water, listening to the rhythm of their strokes, or noticing the subtle shifts in their balance. By giving learners, the freedom to explore, they develop a more intimate relationship with their surroundings.
- Confidence on the Water: The more learners feel they have control over their own progress and decisions, the more confident they become when faced with new challenges. This confidence extends beyond just the mechanics of paddling—it becomes about navigating different water conditions, adapting to changing weather, and even managing fear or anxiety.
Teaching with Flexibility and Fun
One of the most unique aspects of Paddle UK's learner-led approach is the flexibility it provides. Each session feels like a collaboration between instructor and student. I find myself adapting and responding to each learner’s unique pace, interests, and challenges. And because the approach emphasises intrinsic motivation, there’s a natural element of fun and engagement in every session.
- Adaptability: There’s no "one size fits all" in the learner-led philosophy. Whether I’m working with a complete beginner, a seasoned paddleboarder wanting to refine their skills, or someone who just wants to experience the joy of paddling for the first time, I’m able to tailor my approach based on their needs. This creates a rich, varied coaching experience.
- Creating Joyful Learning Experiences: When the focus is on the learner, the environment becomes relaxed, supportive, and encouraging. This makes learning fun! Instead of feeling pressured to “get it right,” students can enjoy the process of discovering their abilities. Watching learners take on challenges with a smile or laugh at themselves when they fall is one of the highlights of coaching for me.
The Impact of a Learner-Led Approach
Paddle UK’s learner-led philosophy isn’t just a teaching method—it’s a mindset that has reshaped how I view coaching. It’s about creating an experience where learners feel heard, respected, and in control of their progress. The results speak for themselves: students who feel empowered and confident on the water are more likely to continue their SUP journey, push their boundaries, and develop a lifelong love for the sport.
Ultimately, Paddle UK’s approach helps people embrace their own journey. It’s not just about mastering techniques or reaching specific goals—it’s about enjoying the process of becoming a better paddler and discovering the incredible sense of freedom that SUP offers.
As a coach, I’m grateful to be part of this process, guiding learners through their SUP experience, and I look forward to continuing to learn and grow alongside them. Whether it's the first paddle, mastering a new skill, or simply having fun on the water, coaching SUP with Paddle UK's learner-led philosophy reminds me why I fell in love with this sport in the first place—and why I can't wait to share that love with others.
So, if you’re considering taking up SUP, or looking to improve your skills, I can’t recommend the learner-led approach enough. It’s not just about learning to paddle—it's about discovering your own rhythm, confidence, and joy on the water. Let's get paddling!
